ALL Media, PNG – Monday 14th August, 2017

The HEBOU PNG Under 19 (U19) Garamuts confirmed their place in the 2018 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup (CWC) with an emphatic eight (8) wicket victory over Samoa in the fifth match of the ICC U19 East-Asia-Pacific (EAP) Qualifier today in Apia, Samoa.

Needing a win to ensure that they claim the 2018 ICC U19 CWC EAP Qualifier and qualify for the U19 World Cup next year, the Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts were asked to field first on another hot day in Apia. The Garamuts started shackly with the ball, before the spinners started making inroads into the Samoan batting lineup. Samoa took it to the previously undefeated Garamuts, before being eventually bowled out for 89 in only 38.4 overs. Leke Morea was the star with the ball taking 3/10 off only seven (7) overs, while spin duo Ovia Sam (3/24) and Toua Morgan (2/17) also icked up valuable wickets.

In reply, the Hebu PNG U19 Garamuts’ openers, Simon Atai (35) and Igo Mahuru (31*) continued their great form of late by putting on 71 runs for the opening wicket. The Garamuts eventually chased down the target of 90, losing a couple of wickets inside 20 overs.

“I am very proud of what the boys achieved over the past week or so here in Samoa. We came to Samoa with a mission to qualify for our eighth ICC U19 World Cup and now we can say that we have done that. We must soak in what we have achieved as it is very special,” said a delighted Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts’ Coach, Kila Pala.

Hebou NG U19 Garamuts’ captain Vagi Karaho was elated after the match and with news of their qualification quickly filtering back home, it was clear just how much it meant for these young Garamuts to earn their place back in the World Cup.

“It’s a really big opportunity for us to play in the World Cup. The boys are very proud, we are feeling very proud for our country,” said Karaho after the match.

Reflecting on what this means for the supporters back home in PNG, Karaho went on to say “all of the people where we are from are very supportive, I think they are more proud than us.”

Leke Morea was awarded the Man of the Match Award for his brilliant spell of bowling which brought back the figures of 3/10 off seven (7) overs.

The Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts will play their final match of the tournament against Vanuatu tomorrow, who lost to Fiji in the other match today.
