HOSPITAL POROMAN FOUNDATION HOST BREAST CANCER BREAKFAST
PORT MORESBY: Voluntary Charity Organization Hospital Poroman Foundation
hosted a breakfast on 21st of April 2015 at Holiday Inn.
The
purpose of hosting this breakfast is to find out ways to mitigate the risk that
modern Papua New Guinean women faced of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The
issue has become a national concern with increasing statistics of women
diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dr Arnold Waine, the guest speaker at the breakfast |
Guest
Speaker at the breakfast was Dr. Arnold Waine. Dr Waine is a senior lecturer in
Surgery at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UPNG).
Dr.
Waine is also a fellow at University of Auckland, New Zealand and Honorary
Senior Surgeon at Port Moresby General Hospital and Private Consultant Surgeon
to Paradise Private Hospital.
Dr
Waine has been a vibrant volunteer of the Charity Organization since the
beginning of this year. He was very passionate about the charity work that the
foundation is doing since its inception back in 2012.
His
work as a volunteer with the foundation started this year. He was inspirational
when the foundation conducted their first medical checks and lifestyle disease
awareness in Parliament house on February 11th-13th, 2015.
Prime
Minister Peter O’Neill acknowledged the voluntary work that the foundation is
doing in raising funds to purchase medical equipments and supplies to build
capacity for rural based health centers, clinics and aid posts throughout the
country.
Dr
Waine involvement in the breakfast was his second appearance with Hospital
Poroman Foundation annual activities. This time his topic was about “breast
cancer in PNG: social implication.”
Breast
Cancer is a national issue and therefore Hospital Poroman Foundation aligning
its activities with the national department of health policy on cancer during
the past decade and its projection about policy in Health Plan 2000-2020.
Dr.
Waine gave example of the data taken from PNG’s two biggest public hospital in
the country. Data obtained from Angau Oncology Center (Lae) since March-June
2012 of old cancer patient statistics shows 2500 cases within that particular
period.

According
to data within that same period of time a total of 66 new cases are being
recorded.
Port
Moresby General Hospital statistics measurement stands at breast cancer
incident rate of 2.7/100,000 cases dating back to 2011. Mortality among young
patient is of great concern in terms of social economic benefits.
These
are some very alarming statistics that needs constant monitoring and continuous
awareness and prescribe treatment.
The
Government of Papua New Guinea through the health department cannot do everything
single handed. Therefore, Hospital Poroman Foundation was formed in order to
compliment and share the responsibility.
Hospital
Poroman Foundation needs volunteers and more support through sponsorship from
the government and the private sector to be able to fund its small secretariat
office to implement its annual activities.
