Tales The Hiri Trade

Listening to the hiri trade stories told by mum. She was fortunate to see the last lakatoi pull onto the shores of Koihelahu, Ihu District around 1956/1957..."it was a great sight to see, with the women on the lakatoi dancing with clay pots, while the Gulf women danced and welcomed them on the beach with beetlenuts and bags of sago".

I could only imagine the beautiful sight on that day.

(Note: The photos are of the Gulf booth at the Melanesian Festival Of Arts at Waigani on Thursday 10th July, 2014. It includes a photo of a Gulf woman selling 'na'a poi' (coconut sago) my mum, dad & sister in-law taking a look at the art & craft and Gulf women selling mats sold at the booth.)
