I understand that our NCDC Governor Power PARKOP is here on ST. That is to be commended. It is no easy task to try to run a city of the magnitude and complexity as Port Moresby. I write this letter to him and hope he takes note of what many are seeing but are not saying.
Governor, I wish to point out that our city is becoming a giant heap of rubbish. Everywhere you look there is filth and chaos.
There is unregulated and illegal structures springing up everywhere you look and the so called informal sector has merely created salesmen for Chinese junk out of Papua New Guineans. The informal sector should be regulated and licensed in designated areas and should be fo arts and craft, instead it is merely a conduit for the sale of filth and rubbish from Asia. The ordinary, honest, rate payer can no longer walk anywhere without fear of harassment by beggars or roadside vendors of some sort. Traffic is chaotic and the constant lack of Police presence on our streets is evident with growing crime. Governor, you started by doing a great job, please keep that up. As it is, over the last few years, the state of our city has deteriorated so badly that it is starting to resemble a small war torn African nation. We have lost Boroko, Manu, Hohola, Tokarara and Gerehu to the riff raff, beggars and street vendors of Asian crap, now the filth and chaos in those parts of town has now spread to other suburbs and is rapidly taking over the CBD of Port Moresby.
Frankly Governor, it is shameful to see what is going on and visitors and law abiding citizens alike are exasperated and disgusted with what is going on. I would like to propose Governor that you call up a meeting with some of the learned people here on ST and discuss this issue and find ways to resolve it. There is also a group here called Yumi Lukaitim Moresby which has many intelligent and capable people who can contribute with strategies.
A very strong anti-litter campaign must be developed and implemented. All illegal structures should be torn down and the persons fined or jailed. All informal sector activity should be confined to designated areas. There should be beat police in every suburb. There should be well resourced Police Stations. Illegal activities should be fined and penalized in this way you can collect revenue and ensure compliance with our laws.
Sometimes Governor, you just have to take the bull by the horns. It may be unpopular with some but you need to be decisive for the greater good of all. Take back our city please. Build a good team andyou will get there.
Otherwise, NCD is surely going to the dogs.
