May 17, 2011
In partnership with the World Bank Group, the governments of the United States and Papua New Guinea will co-host a May 30-June 1, 2011 policy dialogue on effective means to improve women’s lives and livelihoods, including advancing maternal health, increasing economic opportunities, and leadership training. This symposium will welcome 30 women leaders and activists from 12 countries in the Pacific as well as 30 donor community representatives to address key issues and identify opportunities for developing more effective programs and policy recommendations to support women’s advancement in the Pacific region.
U.S. Ambassador-At-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer announced a new “Women’s Empowerment Initiative in the Pacific Region” on November 8, 2010, as a follow-up to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit to the region. The May 2011 conference is one in a series of consultations with regional experts in support of the Initiative. The Initiative fosters several new partnerships in collaboration with the World Bank Group and the governments of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The Initiative is an important element in the U.S. Government’s goal to deepen investment in women in the region.
