"OTML apprentices are among some of the best in the country with enquiring minds and not afraid to ask about any subject matter with regard to their trade."
This was the compliment from the Australian Box Hill TAFE trainer Ian Reid last Friday during the announcement of OTML apprentice of the year award and the presentation of certificates for seven apprentices who completed their two year diploma in engineering technology.
Mr. Reid said he was impressed with the student’s willingness to participate and learn even during difficult circumstances.
He said their learning was evident in their work and in what they produced. He also thanked OTML staff for their support in providing the best training for the apprentices.
The occasion also marked the end of 15 years of training partnership for apprentices between Box Hill TAFE and OTML which began in 1995.
Since that time, 129 apprentices have graduated with diploma in mechanical engineering while another 127 graduated with diploma in electrical engineering.
The Box Hill TAFE training program for mechanical and electrical engineering was introduced to provide PNG nationals with the training to succeed and replace skilled expatriate technical workforce.
The decision was reached by OTML Training and its partner Box Hill TAFE to cease the training because its objectives hav e been achieved.
