THE National Capital District has confirmed a total of 640 cholera cases reported so far.

Most of the cases reported have been stabilised, meaning all people coming in are treated and discharged, mostly with mild and not severe symptoms. No deaths have been reported recently.

Controller Timothy Pyakalyia said awareness in parts of the city was still being carried out and would continue for the next two months.

He said “cholera is our problem, we have created it by ourselves and we have to deal with it’’.

He noted that the city was filthy with a lot of rubbish including betel nut rubbish, papers and plastic, even people burning heaps of rubbish in a public place. He cited Four Mile as a typical example.

“While there is public advocacy on the proper hygiene and the need to control and contain the spread of cholera there are people without brains still creating rubbish out there,” the controller said.

“People who do not care about cholera have this kind of attitude. People want us to do awareness and yet they are throwing rubbish and spitting betel nut in public areas.

“What do we do, control rubbish and spend more money on cleaning up rubbish in the city and not put money where it is mostly needed,” he said.

The frustrated controller said he had outstretched human resources in trying to contain the disease while some people did not seem to care when it came to public health.

Meanwhile Central Province has reported a total of 181 cases as of yesterday. Lealea village has reported 143 cases alone, while Papa has 29 cases. Health officials are now focused on Lealea village with an increase in oral rehydration supplies and more medical supplies to be stocked there. Villagers have been told to report cases earlier and not wait until cases become very severe.
