Tabubil

Well it's been awhile since I've written something. Maybe because I've been moving around so much, I didn't seem to have the time to write up something.

Anyway, I am now in Tabubil, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. I work as a Broadcaster with Radio Fly, a radio station that services the OKTEDI Mining Limited staff & contractors as well as the communities that benefit directly or indirectly from the resource.

It's been what, four months now since I joined and it's been good so far. I must admit it is quite different from commercial radio but it's a different challenge at that.

The radio station I work for comes under the Community Relations Department of OKTEDI Mining Limited.

Anyway, Tabubil is a small organised town compared to other small towns in the country. They call it the "umbrella town" as it rains non-stop here. If it doesn't rain in the day than definately it does at night.

Makes you wonder, if the government builds a huge dam and reservoir, it could definately supply the whole Western Province and neighbouring Gulf Province. I guess it's a good thought. When it becomes a reality is at this stage a dream...

Well Tabubil's got every basic service here. There's a hospital, an airport that does both local and international flights especially for charters.

There's banking facilities here (BSP & WESTPAC) and ATM facilities, a huge supermarket (SVS), hardware store (Tabubil Hardware), schools (an international, a primary school & a high school), fire service, a bus & taxi service, Police station and motor repair companies (Ela Motors & Tabubil Engineering).

There are recreation areas where there is a fully equiped gym, two pool areas, a softball diamond, a soccer field, an indoor basketball court and a rugby league field.

There are clubs here as well;

Tabubil Golf Club
The Hash Club
Gazebo Members Club

You have to be a member to access these clubs.
There is also a hotel here called Hotel Cloudlands.
So basically, it has everything.
